The Wine of the Sea

A few weeks ago I attended a magical wine dinner! Wine dinners are always a fantastic experience, but this one was truly a delight – 16 courses prepared by Chef Jose Andres of Bazaar paired with premier white wine of Spain, Martin Codax Albarino. Yes you read that right, 16 courses with one wine. Truly extraordinary!

The evening was hosted by lovely Mariola Varona of Bodegas Martin Codax… a woman with a mission and passion for her native Spain.

Martin Codax Albarino takes its name from a 13th century Galician minstrel whose poems evoke the gallant love and passion for the sea. It’s no coincidence that “Albarino” wine is sometimes called “The Wine of the Sea” because of the impact that the Atlantic Ocean has on the weather over the vineyards-ample water, sunshine and mineral-rich soils.

This refreshing food friendly wine is crisp and dry, with aromas and flavors of citrus fruit, green apple, peach and floral notes.

I am no stranger to wine or wine dinners (thanks to my day job), but what made this dinner absolutely extraordinary and so memorable was the 16 courses of Spanish tapas paired with only one wine. I must say a very bold move, but absolutely perfect. All the pairings were spot on!

The 16 course menu included vegetables, cheeses, meats, seafood and desserts. Such diverse choices . Our host graciously shared with us that the success behind the pairings was all part to “careful planning, tastings and a lot of conversations with the chef”.

Natural pairing for this “Wine of the Sea” would be shellfish, seafood or salad, but probably the most intriguing and unexpected pairing of the evening was the steak with coffee rub. In wine world, you would think this pairing was breaking all the rules, but it was exquisite!

The best part of the evening, were new friends that I made and of course Mariola, a force behind the brand but also a great role model to women in business.
