ESSENTIAL OILS

If you follow me on instagram, you’ve probably seen me sharing about essential oils. I’ve used oils sporadically for about 5 years, and ever since I moved to Colorado I really dived in the science and wellness behind these powerful plants in the bottle.

Incorporating oils into my lifestyle is just one more step I’m taking to really claim control over my health, body, and how I function. The most important thing is realizing that there’s tools and resources out there to help you combat whatever personal struggle you’re going through.

Why I Use Essential Oils

When it comes to essential oils, Young Living sets the standard for purity and authenticity. I chose Young Living because they’re the top essential oils producer worldwide, with farms located all over the world where they grow, source, and produce all of their own oils and products backed by their Seed to Seal process. I believe in their integrity and desire to provide the best possible 100% therapeutic grade essential oils for their members. Aside from that, here’s a few more facts:
  • Essential oils are distilled or pressed directly from plants. Basically, a bottle of essential oil is the purest form of the respective plant that it’s coming from.
  • Essential oils quickly penetrate the tissues of the skin, getting into your blood stream within 30 seconds when used topically.
  • Young Living is the world leader in essential oils and has an incredible process of producing oils – more about their Seed to Seal process here.
  • Oils can be used to assist or aid in your daily bodily functions, boost immunity, contribute to your mental focus, cultivate spirituality, and much more.
  • Oils can be used individually or blended with another oil. Some oils bring out the maximum benefits in another when blended together.
  • Oils can be diffused aromatically, used topically, or ingested (marked by the white Vitality bottles).
I was so excited to get these oils and start using them, that I wanted more. I ended up taking it a step further and signed up for the monthly wellness box with Young Living where you can earn rewards and free oils, while picking all of your own products every single month.

**Please note I am NOT a certified aromatherapist.  The information shared below is based off my own experience and use, and I cannot be held accountable for your own experience.  Please do your research on how to apply and use each oil, as this article does not go into those safety guidelines.

Because essential oils are basically breaking down parts of the plant into its chemical compounds, you MUST use oils from a high-quality source, especially when you are using them topically (or internally, as you can with Young Living Essential oils). I prefer either certified organic or sustainable harvested with healthy farming practices. etc. Just because the bottle says “pure” or “natural” does not make it so, unfortunately.

4 Ways to Use Young Living at Home

How to Get Started with Essential Oils

LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL

Favorite Oils &
How to Use Them

  • Mood Elevator - happy, uplifting smell.
  • Cleansing Smell - I use it in room sprays, linen sprays, countertop sprays – you name it.
  • Cooking - Add some while you sauté veggies or to fresh summer salads.
  • Laundry - I drop it on wool dryer balls to really freshen up my laundry.
  • Travel - Works great as a car refresher.  Dab some onto a paper towel or tissue and let it hang by the air vent. My favorite little trick is I’ll drop some on a sock when I’m packing up a suitcase for travel.  Every time you open your bag you get a lovely smell and your clothes will smell fresh for your whole trip.
  • Natural “Glue Gone” – drop or two removes all stickers from photo frames or wooden surfaces without any damage to it

EUCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OIL

  • Provides great respiratory support and clearing congestion
  • Refreshing, medicinal smell that can help improve your concentration, clear your head and help you focus

FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL

They call it the king of oils, and truly, I feel like frankincense is a miracle worker for skin issues.
  • Healthy Skin – natural Botox – smooths skin and fine lines
  • Peace and Tranquility – one of the most calming smells
  • Diffusing - I like to diffuse it when I’m sitting next to the computer and my stress level is a bit high.

GRAPEFRUIT ESSENTIAL OIL

  • Refreshing and uplifting essential oil
  • Bright, tangy scent that can help revive your senses and improve your mood.
  • Known for its cleansing properties, making it perfect for use in aromatherapy or skin care recipes.

PEACE AND CALMING ESSENTIAL OIL

  • Every day begins and ends with PC blend. This nurturing blend featured Ylang Ylang, Orange, Tangerine, Patchouli and Blue Tansy.
  • Diffuse the chaos - Use it in your car vent diffuser to help you chill out during commutes and carpools.
  • Keep calm around - Wear it as a personal fragrance on your neck and wrists.
  • Treat your feet - Add ¼ cup of Epsom salt and 2 drops of Peace & Calming to hot water for a soothing foot soak before bed.

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

  • Skin irritations and great for soothing burns.
  • Bug bites - a quick dab and it immediately stops itching.
  • Sleep - Can’t sleep?  Can’t get a kid to sleep?  - one drop on the corner of the pillow and away we drift.
  • Laundry - I’ll also use lavender on dryer balls or to freshen up a drawer.
  • Diffusing - I love diffusing it, especially during allergy season.  Seems to slightly help my daughter who has allergies.

DIGIZE ESSENTIAL OIL

  • This unique blend contains ginger, anise, fennel, peppermint, tarragon, lemongrass, patchouli, and juniper essential oils.
  • This blend is perfect when it comes to relieving digestive problems, including indigestion, heartburn, gas and bloating for everyone in your family
  • Relieves anxiety, promotes good sleep, reduces inflammation, and most importantly relieves menstrual symptoms
  • Upset tummies are common in kids, so the next time your kid complains of an upset tummy, try this happy tummy roller instead: 10 drops peppermint, 10 drops Digize, Fill with a carrier oil, then apply clockwise around naval or area of discomfort, and bottoms of feet. Mama tip – Apply a warm washcloth or towel after you have applied the oils. Heat increases the blood flow to the skin surface, which can diminish the perception of pain coming from deeper in the abdomen.

PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

  • Cures headaches and hangovers - rubbing some peppermint on the back of my neck or temples is all I need, and it works like magic.
  • Breath refresher – when in need of a good breath refresher, I’ll put a drop on my toothbrush when I brush.  No mouthwash needed.
  • Massage - My husband helps me work out muscle knots in my back with a few drops of peppermint and coconut oil.
  • Diffusing - I love diffusing it with lemon and lavender to really freshen up our home.

Are you looking for a way to improve your overall wellness? If so, you may want to consider using essential oils. Essential oils have been shown to be helpful in promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and improving sleep quality, among many other benefits. I maintain a conservative approach to using them – meaning, I don’t think they are a cure-all, and I take all the benefits mentioned about each oil with a grain of salt.  My advice is to start small – collect a few oils and add to them over time. The world of essential oils can be quite overwhelming, so here are a few of my favorites that I use regularly and incorporate into my daily routines. Their benefits have been proven to me time and time again.
